Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

SEO stands for search engine optimization and is what you do to get your website to a higher rank in search engines. If you create a website, seo is one of the most important steps to having a good website. There are two types of seo work which is onpage optimization and offpage optimization and fireworking's blog will teach you the fundamentals of both of them.

How Search Engines Work

You may ask the question, how does a search engine find other pages to index?
The answer is in links.

1. A search engine sends out a "bot" or "spider" and crawls your pages. After it has indexed one page, it will look for a link on the page. Then they will follow into the link and index that website also. The cycle keeps going on until a page has no links. Then the search engine will start from a random site that they have already indexed and starts crawling again.

2. After a search engine indexes a page, the information goes into a very big database containing infromation from the website. These pages are very precisely recorded so that when a user sends a query, they can locate the information in a fraction of a second.

3. A Query is a request for information from a search engine. The search engine will then match up with their database and see if there are any pages that are relevant. Sometimes, Search engines remove words such as "and", "if", "is", and other common words.

4. The search engine will rank the pages by relevance and popularity and other SEO factors. Once everything is sorted out, the search enginewill send them to the browser (of course they will not send all 30 million results at the same time). This blog will teach you how to get your page to be on the top.

Keyword Picking

The first step before making a website is to find a good keyword to start with. This is also referred as a niche. This is very important because if you try to optimize for a keyword that nobody searches for, you will be very sucessful for ranking first on google but very few people will go to your website. Very seldomly will go search "mysuperrocksnet" on google. If nobody searches for your keyword, you would have just wasted all your time on your work! That is why you will need to find a good keyword. A good resource for doing this is to go to www.goodkeywords.com to find good keywords to use. It tells you how many times in the last month that keyword was searched. Many people make mistakes by starting with the keyword that the most people search because they will never even make it to the top 100! The competition is very brutal there and starters wont stand a chance on the big guys. For now, you should focus on keywords that have less than 20,000 and more than 3,000 searches in the last month. Also, it is important to stay out of the top 10 if possible. After you rank in the top 10 or so for the keyword(s) you wanted, then you will be able to aim for higher searched ranking results. Usually, it is good to target about three categories. If you have not picked a domain yet, it is very important to pick ones related to your keywords you are optimizing for as google will rank a domain with "rocks" in it more than "fascinatingminerals" if you are aiming for rocks.

Onpage Optimization

Onpage optimization is very easy to do and also it will also bump your rank up by the hundreds! On your website, there should be a title on the top of your browser. An example of a bad title is "Welcome to our site!". that is a very bad title because nobody searches that on google. Also, another bad example is "free computer games and good computer games and computer game review" although it contains all your keywords, google will think you are spamming therefore google will give you a penalty and your ranking will drop severely. Google will also assign each of those keywords a lower ranking(keyword density). An analogy for this is sharing a pail of water. You have a pail of water which contains 1 gallon and you can choose to split to 4 other pails to carry or to 8 other pails to carry. If you split it to 4 pails, each one will get 1/4 gallons of the original pail or 0.25 gallons. If you split it to 8 pails, each one will get 1/8 gallons of the original pail or 0.125 gallons. Each of your keywords will have 1/16 points from google compared to 1/3 points from google. First, remove all the ands from your keywords. This would turn it into "free computer games good computer games computer game review. Second, Try to combine two keywords. It would become "free computer games good computer game review". Third, add the "" symbol near the enter or return key. After the third edit it would become "free computer games good computer game review" Now instead of having 1/10 of the keyword points on each word, you would have 1/7 of the keyword points.

It is important to scatter your keywords around your webpage and bold the important keywords. First, when you scatter your keywords, instead of saying "Welcome to this website", you should say "Welcome to fireworking's seo blog". This way, your rankings will increase in google. Also, it is important to bold a sentence with important words. Still more updates have to be written. please stay tuned to fireworking's blog. Thank you. "Welcome to fireworking's seo blog" should be bolded. REMEMBER: Do not over do bolding. Bolding once is very good to help your website but after that one time, google wont like it and may penalize your website.

There is a good trick to do and is in the footer. At the very end of your webpages, you should put a footer that says:"© copyright 2008 your keywords here". That way, it will look natural and will give you a boost to your main keywords. Just do not put your whole title there, just put your keywords you are aiming for the most.

Offpage Optimization

Where the real ranking comes in is in Offpage optimization. Onpage optimization is when you are targeting for a specific keyword. Offpage optimization is the factors that affect you outside of your web page. Mainly this is determined by pages linking to you.

PageRank

Google uses pagerank to determine which sites are useful on the web and Google uses that to index pages.
